Weather conditions for USA VS. Portugal

Posted: Updated:

The World Cup. It's a time where people all over the world share their love for soccer and their country. People wear flags on their backs and clothing to match their country's colors. If you were like me, this past Monday the colors to wear were red, white and blue!

This past Mondays win over Ghana did not come easily with USA scoring in the final minutes of the game to take the lead. USA did not come out of the match up unscathed however. Furman University graduate, Clint Dempsey suffered a nose fracture after a high kick from John Boye.

Another heart breaking injury came earlier in the game and was a strained left hamstring to Striker Jozy Altidore. As a result, Altidore will likely miss the game against Portugal this Sunday, which is a tough blow to the USA team. The meteorologist in me often urges me to look at weather conditions when such injuries occur.

Though Brazil is in the southern Hemisphere and is currently approaching their winter months, the environment is much more tropical than what we see for much of the US. Especially since the arena falls just 3 degrees south of the equator. Muscle injuries such as strains and cramps often occur in hot, humid conditions. Consequently, these are the exact conditions the USA team is playing in at the world cup.

This Sunday at 6pm, USA will take on Portugal in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil in an arena that is located in Northern Brazil. Conditions this Sunday will be very similar to this past Mondays. They will likely see light winds with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, which in Fahrenheit, translates to the mid-80s. Humidity will be high as well, sitting at about 78-80%! Also, look to see a 50% chance of rain during the game.

With these tropical conditions plaguing the World Cup, we can only hope the players do all their stretches and drink plenty of water to prevent any further muscle injuries. Remember to wear red, white and blue to show your support this Sunday!

U-S-A!… U-S-A!… U-S-A!…
