Patients relocated at MedWest Haywood Medical Center after small fire

CLYDE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

MedWest Haywood Medical Center had to relocate patients after a small fire broke out in their power room.

A spokesman for MedWest said the fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

No one was hurt during the incident but the fire did cause the air handling units to malfunction. All patients were relocated to other facilities.

The Emergency Department at MedWest will stay open for walk-in patients and ER patients will also be treated there, but ambulance service and anyone needing admission will be taken to other facilities in the area.

Eleven emergency agencies responded to the scene, including the Junaluska Fire Department, Maggie Valley Fire Department, Canton Fire Department, North Canton Fire Department, Clyde Fire Department, Crabtree-Iron Duff Fire Department, Haywood County Rescue Squad, Haywood County EMS, Haywood County Emergency Management, Haywood County Fire Marshall, Haywood County Sheriff's Office.

Duke Power was on scene investigating the cause of the fire along with emergency crews.

On Friday, the hospital will be running on generator power while they repair damage and get the air conditioning operational.
