First day of summer approaches

Posted: Updated:

The first day of summer is on Saturday, making it the longest day of the year (in daylight hours).  The season begins on a hot note, with the same forecast we've had all week: a high of 94, humid, with a 30% chance of afternoon storms.  Is this normal for this time of year?  Let's take a look back at the previous years' first days of summer.

2010 - High of 94, no rain.

2011 - Record high of 97, no rain.

2012 - High of 91, no rain.

2013 -High of 84, no rain.

The typical high temperature for the Upstate this time of year is 88, so more often than not, the first day of summer has been above average in the last few years.  This year is no different with the forecast of 94.  There hasn't been much rain on the summer solstice in recent years (at least not at GSP, where Upstate records are taken).  But this year, you'll want to keep an eye out for pop-up afternoon thunderstorms over the first weekend of summer.
