WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Two Fair Play men have been charged in the theft of materials from the new Walhalla High School on Thursday.

Public information officer Jimmy Watt said 32-year-old Brandon Wheeler and 43-year-old Keith Schlachter are both charged with grand larceny of rebar and other building materials valued at $3,000.

According to Watt, deputies responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle on Highway 11 between Scenic Heights Baptist Church and Dollar General, where they discovered a trailer on the side of the road with a blown tire.

Witnesses said they saw suspects leave from the new Walhalla High construction site with the trailer and unhook it on the side of the road.

Deputies found a packing slip with the name of the construction company handling construction at the school, Watt said.

The suspects' vehicle was found at the Ingles in West Union.

Deputies spoke with Wheeler and Schlachter who said they had permission to take the material. The construction company said that was not true.
