GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a deputy shot a suspect that was charging at him with a knife in an apartment complex.

Dispatchers said the shooting happened at the Huntington Downs Apartment complex on Roper Mountain Road Sunday.

Deputies said the suspect was threatening a woman inside an apartment when they arrived. According to Drew Pinciaro with the sheriff's office, the deputy located the man on the side of the building, where they said he was armed with a knife. He said the suspect began to run away but the responding officer followed him to the tennis court area.

The deputy tried to calm the suspect, who then began shouting that he would stab the deputy if he approached him, deputies said. Pinciaro said the man also threatened to kill the deputy then  began running toward the deputy with the knife, and the deputy shot the suspect.

Children and others nearby were unharmed.

That suspect was taken to the hospital to undergo treatment. The deputy has been put on administrative duty while South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigates the shooting, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
