PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

An August 2016 trial date has been set for a homeless career criminal accused of killing a Phoenix priest.

Gary Michael Moran is accused of breaking into Mother of Mercy Mission Catholic Church in downtown Phoenix in June, killing Rev. Kenneth Walker and beating up Rev. Joseph Terra.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Moran.

Moran was arrested four days after the attack.

Moran pleaded not guilty to the charges July 17 in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Moran, 54, is being held on a $1 million bond, charged with first-degree murder, burglary, armed robbery and other charges.

Police said Moran shot Walker multiple times with a gun he took away from Terra after he beat Terra with a metal bar in the rectory of the church in south Phoenix on June 11.

Moran was arrested June 15 after police matched his DNA with forensic evidence collected from the crime scene, a police spokesman said.

Moran was sent to the Arizona Department of Corrections prison in Tucson on Feb. 8, 2005, on burglary and assault charges, and was released on supervised parole April 24.

He served five years for a previous burglary in which he stabbed a homeowner.

He also has a 1989 conviction for felony burglary and pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in 2000.
