ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A former Anderson City Council member has been sentenced to five months in prison on an obstruction charge, U.S. attorney Anne Thompkins announced Monday.

In January, former At-Large Eighth Seat Chair and attorney 44-year-old Charles Anderson pleaded guilty to "making false statements in a matter within the jurisdiction of a department or agency of the United States."

In a release from the Department of Justice, they said Anderson lied to federal agents about his knowledge of the whereabouts of two vehicles of one of his clients, Lonnie Maddox, who is currently facing federal drug charges in South Carolina. The DOJ said Anderson lied to federal agents on five occasions between Feb. 21 and March 15, 2013.

U.S. District Judge Michelle Childs sentenced Anderson to five months in prison, along with three years of supervised release with the condition that the first five months will be under home confinement with location monitoring.

He will also have to perform 100 hours of community service or to complete a week-long community service project.
