A Pickens High School student and a local pilot died in a plane crash in Arizona over the weekend.

Youth pastor Steven Groves confirmed to FOX Carolina that Pickens High School 10th-grader Dakota Jacks and Mike Trotter were killed after their plane went down during a weeklong sightseeing trip.

Groves said they had flown over Utah, Nevada and Arizona where they went to see the Grand Canyon.

He said on Friday they fueled up at an airport near Page, AZ and took off. Shortly after, something happened and the plane went down in a canyon. According to a FAA spokesperson the plane was reported missing Saturday.

The two were found by first responders Sunday.

Pickens County Schools spokesman John Eby released the following statement on Monday:

"We are stunned and saddened to learn of the death of Dakota Jacks, a rising 10th grader at Pickens High School. Dakota was involved in a plane crash on his way home from Arizona over the weekend. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dakota's family, friends and teachers. He was an Honors student, a Pickens High School JROTC cadet, and a part of the school's Bluegrass music group. Dakota was an outstanding member of the Blue Flame family, and he will be greatly missed."

Trotter's family said he loved flying and his job as a nurse.
