TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officers responding to head-on crash along U.S. 25 in Travelers Rest jumped into the burning wreckage to rescue a driver as flames spread on Sunday.

Travelers Rest Police Chief Lance Crowe said an officer on patrol found the two-car crash about 5 a.m. just outside the city limits.

Crowe said a car was going the wrong way, entering Travelers Rest from the south when it hit another car head-on.

Crowe said the patrolling officer, Corporal Mason Johnson, stopped to help the victims. Firefighters and paramedics were called to help as one driver was unresponsive, pinned in his car, and the other was trapped in his truck.

A fire erupted in the first car, so Johnson and officer Matt Nodine tried to put it out with their fire extinguishers but the blaze re-ignited and continued to burn, Crowe said.

He said the blaze began to engulf the driver's side but Johnson and Nodine were able to remove him from the car. Firefighters arrived and were able to extinguish the fire and rescue the other driver from his truck.

One of the drivers was airlifted to the hospital and the other was taken by paramedics, Crowe said. The crash is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Coroner Jeff Fowler said one of the men died as a result of the collision. The victim's name has not been released at this time.
