ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Some who live in Anderson County say they are concerned about the water, saying it smells and tastes bad.

Ray Findley had a lot to say on Tuesday afternoon about the water.

"You try to drink the water and it tastes like dirt," Findley said. "The water smells like dirt when you're trying to take a shower."

He lives in Anderson and he and his family decided to boil their water before using it to eat, drink and bathe.

"It's got the bad taste and the bad smell," he said. "To me that gets costly when you're already paying a $50 to $60 a month water bill."

Administrators with Anderson Regional Joint Water System say the issue is coming from its Lake Hartwell raw water source. They say an increase in algae is causing an earthy taste and odor and it's a seasonal thing that's happened before.

Casina Metz lives near the water system in Anderson County just off Lake Hartwell.

"They're doing a lot of work up there," Metz said. "A couple of years ago, you know it almost went dry."

She says her neighbors noticed a difference in the water.

"The color and the smell and the taste of it," she said.

But her family only noticed a change in odor.

Administrators with Anderson Regional Water say their treatment process meets all health standards, and the odor causing compound poses no health issues.

"They're doing the best they can do under the circumstances," Metz said.

However, Findley says they should do more.

Findley said he and his family voluntarily decided to boil their water. A boiled water advisory is not in effect.
