TRYON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A groundbreaking was held for a new, world-class equestrian resort in western North Carolina.

Tryon Equestrian Partners and Salamander Hotels & Resorts announced their plans to open Tryon Resort in Mill Spring.

The resort will be located on a 1,400-acre property with 500 stables, miles of walking and bridle paths, and several structures including several homes.

Construction began earlier in 2014 and through the project, hundreds of permanent jobs will be created and tens of millions of dollars will be invested locally.

Once completed, the equestrian facility will feature 10 riding arenas, including one that seats 6,000, a total of 1,000 permanent stalls, a covered riding facility, playground, tennis courts, mountain bike park, climbing walls, and more.

"Our goal is to create a special place that focuses on the passion and love for both horses and horse sport," said Mark Bellissmo, managing partner of Tryon Equestrian Partners.

The resort will also feature Salamander's latest 150-room hotel. The company manages several other large golf resorts in Florida and an equestrian-inspired resort near Washington, DC.
