A Gaffney man charged in the shooting death of his wife appeared before a Cherokee County judge Friday morning, where he was read the charge against him.

Cherokee County deputies said William Pennington, 68, has been charged with murder.

The judge ordered Pennington to reappear for his second hearing on Aug. 21. A bond hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said Rita Pennington died at the scene.

Detectives said murder warrants were signed and William Pennington was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Pennington will appear in court at 9 a.m. Friday, according to deputies.

According to the Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, visitation services for Rita Pennington will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Shuford-Hatcher's downtown chapel.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Frederick Memorial Gardens.
