Ikea's minimum wage increase raising the bar for American retailers?

Ikea's U.S. division is raising the minimum wage for thousands of its retail workers, pegging it to the cost of living in each location, instead of its competition.

The 17 percent average raise, announced Thursday, is the Swedish ready-to-assemble furniture chain's biggest in 10 years in the U.S.

The pay increase will take effect Jan. 1. It will translate to an average wage of $10.76 an hour, a $1.59 increase from the previous $9.17.

About half of Ikea's 11,000 hourly store workers will get a raise. How much will vary based on the cost of living in each store location.

The company's move will likely add to the national debate over increasing the federal minimum wage, currently $7.25 per hour, which hasn't been raised since 2009.

Ikea does not plan to raise prices for customers in order to pay for the wage increases.

Miss Delaware loses crown for being "too old"

Pageant officials say the woman named Miss Delaware less than two weeks ago will lose her crown because she older than the Miss America organization allows.

Twenty-four-year Amanda Longacre was crowned June 14 and turns 25 in October. A state ruling says contestants must be between 17 to 24-years-old throughout the whole year.

Pageant officials didn't realize the mistake until after she signed the contract with the Miss Delaware scholarship organization.

She reported her correct age and they told her she could compete, WDEL-AM reports.

After officials realized their mistake, they broke the news that she would not be able to compete in the Miss America pageant in September and that she was being stripped of her title and all prizes associated with the title - including an $11,000 scholarship that was going to help her pursue her master's degree in social work.

Longacre says she didn't know about the age stipulation and she thinks she's being punished for the organization's mistake.

Runner-up Brittany Lewis was crowned Miss Delaware 2014 Thursday night.
