GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is asking people to avoid contact with the water in and around Half-Mile Lake in Greenville County.

In a media release Friday, the department said it had discovered has discovered a sanitary sewer system overflow near the Half-Mile Lake subdivision on State Park Road in Greenville.

The overflow sent approximately 4,000 gallons of untreated waste water into a tributary which feeds into Half-Mile Lake, DHEC said.

DHEC has posted warning signs at commonly used access areas. The public is advised to avoid contact with waters around and downstream of the overflow location, including Half-Mile Lake and the tributary which feeds into the lake.

DHEC said a clogged sewer collection line caused the overflow.
