SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said they tried to stop a car seen speeding, but it drove off, running a stop sign before crashing Saturday.

Police on patrol said they saw a gray Toyota Camry headed east on Collins Avenue and the car passed the officer at a high rate of speed.

The officer put its lights on to try and stop the car, but it kept going, accelerating, according to the police report.

Police said the officer called off a chase and saw the car run through a stop sign at Hanover Place and Duncan Street but then lost sight of it.

Not long after, police said a crash involving the Camry was reported at Alexander Avenue at South Converse Street.

Officers said they responded and found the wrecked car, with the driver trapped inside. According to the police report, the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries and would be charged with failure to stop for blue light and disregarding a stop sign.
