SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police were called to a fight after they said a teenage suspect punched a clerk and pulled out her hair during a fight after he tried to steal a pair of boots.

Police said the 16-year-old was spotted walking out of Citi Trends on South Church STreet without paying for the boots on Monday.

When a clerk called out to him to bring the boots back and said she would call 911, he returned them, police said. According to the police report, the teen became irate, took a fighting stance and swung to punch the clerk.

He hit her in the nose and she fought back, police said. During the scuffle, police said the teen pulled out some of the clerk's hair.

According to the report, the teen denied shoplifting and his mother showed up angry about what happened. Police said the boy had a small cut on his neck, but he and the clerk denied medical care.

Another witness told police she saw the incident. The teen was arrested and charged with shoplifting and third-degree assault and battery.
