PALO ALTO, Calif., July 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the White House's recent crackdown on seafood fraud and illegal fishing, Frequentz has announced the expansion of Information Repository & Intelligence Server (IRIS) beyond food, life sciences, and industrial supply chains to include a seafood and sustainability traceability solution. It also covers various global seafood traceability trade and regulatory requirements and is the first market expansion since taking over the platform from IBM.
The seafood and sustainability traceability solution is event-driven and provides organizations, including fisherman, wholesalers, retailers, and government agencies, with end-to-end supply chain visibility, chain of custody from boat to plate and a mobile authentication application. Frequentz's client and Europe's largest retailer, METRO GROUP, have already piloted the seafood and sustainability traceability solution.
Frequentz plans to roll out the seafood traceability solution in the United States this year.

In 2013, OCEANA reported that 54 percent of tuna samples and 87 percent of red snapper samples were mislabeled. 86 percent of seafood consumed in the United States is imported, according to NOAA.
In response, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry announced new initiatives to protect oceans and ensure consumption of safe, sustainable and authentic seafood that seeks to redefine how seafood will be caught and what types of seafood consumers are willing to purchase. These initiatives address a number of serious factors affecting seafood fraud. For example, a new effort to fight seafood fraud, combat black market seafood and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing globally. In turn, a comprehensive end-to-end traceability requirement that will create a chain of custody, from boat to plate, for all seafood sold in the U.S. In addition, the President seeks to grow consumer demand for safe seafood and expand the market for sustainably caught seafood.
