Flies and dirty utensils in this week's Restaurant Report

Posted: Updated:

Flies top the violations we found in the health inspection report for one local restaurant. Dirty utensils were a problem at another place.

The flies were noted by a health inspector at McDonald's at 13170 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield. It had 6 critical violations on its last inspection report. Most were fixed on the spot. But the inspector wrote that inadequate measures were being used to control flies and to contact the pest controller to step up measures. When the inspector returned 11 days later, significant fly activity was noted on the report, but that steps were being taken to control them. All other violations had been corrected.

In Richmond, Mediterranean Brick Oven and Catering at 2557 Sheila Lane had 4 critical violations. The report says knives, ladles, serving spoons, and tongs were soiled to sight and touch and food in the display case, walk-in cooler, and sandwich prep table were not being kept cold enough. Violations were corrected during the inspection.

"It's small, but it's big flavor!" said Jane Hicks of her restaurant Sisters Cafe at 606 Commerce Road in Richmond.

It wins the NBC12 Hall of Fame Award for acing its health inspections. Hicks says they owe their success to keeping things simple.

She told us, "Because it's for everyone. It's not labeled as soul food or whatever. It's just good home cooking."
