UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Union County jailer has been charged with the assault of a female inmate, according to Sheriff David Taylor.

Taylor said jail officer Ronald Pruitt, 38, was charged by SLED with third-degree assault and battery of the inmate at the jail on May 31.

A physical altercation between the inmate and Pruitt led to the woman getting pushed up against the wall, causing a laceration to the head which required stitches, according to Taylor.

Taylor said he requested SLED investigate after he reviewed the video from inside the jail.

Pruitt is awaiting a bond hearing on Wednesday.

SLED said the charge is a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500 upon conviction.

Taylor said Pruitt is on leave without pay.
