SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Charlotte man is accused of trying to cash a fraudulent check belonging to Boiling Springs First Baptist Church, according to deputies.

Spartanburg County deputies said they were called to a branch of First Piedmont Bank on Wednesday where the suspect, 56-year-old Thomas Smith, was detained.

Smith told investigators he is paid $50 cash to cash checks for people he met at a men's shelter in Charlotte, according to the sheriff's office report.

The report stated the $958.04 check was in the Church's name, but a church employee said it was not authorized. The church said due to recent fraudulent activity on the account, they changed their checks, deputies said.

Deputies said Smith was able to cash the check at one location of First Piedmont Bank in Spartanburg and was stopped at another location with a check for $973.49, but it was not cashed.

Smith was arrested and charged with forgery less than $10,000.
