SC beaches in good shape with new storm season

FOLLY BEACH, SC (AP) -

South Carolina's beaches are in good shape to withstand what the new hurricane season may throw at it.

Coastal regulators say the state has not been hit by a major hurricane in recent years and millions have been spent on beach rebuilding projects during the past decade. But areas around inlets along the coast remain susceptible to erosion.

The most recent beach renourishment project was a $30 million effort completed last month to rebuild Folly Beach.

Hurricane Arthur is spinning by the state and the National Weather Service says that waves breaking at as much as 9 feet could cause some beach erosion.

Staffers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers take pictures of renourishment projects before storms approach to better gauge how they hold up.
