Man convicted in 1975 triple homicide denied parole

The year is 1975 and the Greenville News headline is about three girls found dead. But Clemilee Smith doesn't need a newspaper to remind her of what she lives every day.

"It's been hard, very hard," Smith said. "She said 'bye momma' and Cynthia said 'bye.'"

Back in September of 1975, her daughter 16-year-old Kathy Smith and her daughter's friend, 18-year-old Cynthia Jones, headed to a Greenville High School football game.

"I told my son they haven't got home yet," Clemilee Smith said.

Witnesses told police they saw the girls at a drive-in and at the Cougar Lounge off Anderson Road in Greenville County.

"And I said, 'is she dead, or what's wrong?' And he said 'you just have to come up here,'" Clemilee Smith said.

Investigators found the bodies of Kathy Smith, Cynthia Jones and 18-year-old Rhonda Adams floating in the Reedy River.

"He raped them. Then he drugged them. Then he shaved their hair. Then he threw them in the river," she said.

Investigators arrested Charles Williams, known back then as Charles "Goldie" McCrary.

"Hoping and praying that he won't get out," Clemliee Smith said.

Williams is now up for parole and Clemilee Smith makes sure she never misses a hearing.

"I hope he doesn't get out," she said.

During Williams' trial, Clemilee Smith said investigators revealed they found a book in his motel room entitled Pimp. The book is written by Iceberg Slim, a well-known pimp back in the 1960s and 70s.

"He relived the life of Iceberg Slim," she said.

Clemilee Smith believes that's the motive behind the murders.

"So, he doesn't have a heart," she said.

And that's what motivates her to try to keep him in prison.

Smith said the parole board denied Williams parole on Wednesday morning. It was the seventeenth time he had gone before the board in his 37 years behind bars.

He's being held at the Broad River Correctional Institute in Columbia.
