Neighbors call for an end to violence in central Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There were calls in central Toledo on Sunday to end the violence.

One person is dead and two others are wounded in two separate incidents this weekend.

Saturday night just before 11 PM, 28 year old Robert Harris was shot in the 800 block of Vance Street.

He later died at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

As of Sunday night, the killer is still on the loose.

Then just before 11:30 AM Sunday morning, two people were shot not far from the homicide scene near the intersection of Fernwood and Lawrence Avenues.

There were prayers for peace Sunday at New Bethel Bountiful Blessing Church.

Pastor Rance Allen says the street violence shows a lack of consideration for one another.

Saturday night's slaying occurred right outside of his church.

"When you're not concerned about me and I'm not concerned about you, the least little thing can just blow up in both our faces and people end up dead," said Pastor Allen.

That lack of concern continued Sunday just blocks from the church.

Gun shells littered Fernwood Avenue near Wells.

Minutes earlier, Toledo Police say shots were fired from an S-U-V, striking a man in the groin.

Another vehicle began chasing the S-U-V, which sideswiped several cars along the way.

The S-U-V broke down and two people inside took off running.

One turned up at a hospital with a gunshot wound.

The other is still missing.

One neighbor who asked not to be identified says it's fortunate nobody else was hit when the bullets began to fly.

"It's a tragedy. Continuous violence around here. It just don't make no sense. There's a lot of kids that stay around here," said the neighbor.

Pastor Allen says Toledoans have to stand tall and stand strong.

It's a process, he believes, that will get folks to lead better lives.

"We believe that if we can change your mind, that will cause you to change your actions and change your direction. We can change the city," said Pastor Allen.
