LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A judge presiding over the trial of a man accused of opening fire in the backstage area of an all-male revue on the Las Vegas Strip declared a mistrial Wednesday.
In the ruling made in the second day of the trial, the judge learned a juror briefly viewed news coverage of Joey Kadmiri in court, FOX5's Lindsay Curtis reported from the courtroom.
According to Curtis, the juror told the court he accidentally saw about 15 seconds of a newscast on Tuesday night. The juror was excused, after which Kadmiri's defense team called for a mistrial.
In addition, the juror stated telling others he saw the trial was being covered but never told them what he saw in the report, Curtis reported. In later questioning, the juror then discussed his thoughts on evidence to other jurors, which prompted his dismissal.
After the dismissal, prosecutors and defense attorneys were in favor of a mistrial, which the judge granted.
Kadmiri was charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and burglary with a deadly weapon connected to the March 18 shooting in the backstage area of Thunder From Down Under.
According to an arrest report, crew and dancers with the show at the Excalibur hotel-casino saw a man wandering backstage and rifling through their belongings.
Police said Kadmiri pulled out a handgun when he was confronted by dancers, opening fire at least once.
