As reported by the article in The Telegraph, dated 06 Jun 2014 by Jessica Winch: I lost £17,500 in 'vishing' scam - because 'I didn't watch The One Show', 66-year old Susan Sinclair, from Pitton near Salisbury was allegedly the victim of fraud on April 4th after a supposed telephone call from the Visa fraud investigation unit. The scheme is also known as vishing, and it involves fraudsters getting victims to reveal confidential financial information. They pose as personnel or representatives of the bank over the phone, and persuade the victim to make payments online. Thousands and thousands of pounds are stolen by this fraud every day, with more people falling victim to fraud.
The Telegraph report goes on to say that Mrs. Sinclair, who is now a retired psychotherapist, received a call and was allegedly told that her card was used for fraudulent purposes at Argos. She was asked to read the number on the back of her card to the supposed representative. She transferred a total of £17,500, before she realized it was a scam.
