Saturday's weather was perfect for fun and games in Blunt Park. However the athletes from Central and Western Massachusetts threw in plenty of competition as well.
The annual Special Olympics softball and bocce tournament took place throughout the day.
The bocce participants competed as a single or a team.
The softball games were played as unified sports, which included athletes with intellectual disabilities and their partners, to sharpen their skills.
The event improves self-esteem and of course creates new friendships.
"We have 25 members on our local Shrewsbury parks and rec program," said Steve Swanson, the Shrewsbury bocce coach. "It's very active and we've been doing it for a number of years and it's one of our favorite events. My daughter, Stephanie, is an athlete and my son, Danny, is a partner and he's my daughter's partner for the competition today."
Successful teams on Saturday advanced to compete in the state tournament coming up in August.
