Man arrested after five were shot outside of Stamford nightclub

Posted: Updated:

A Stamford man was arrested early Sunday morning after five people were shot outside of Tino's Nightclub.

Police said they responded to 84 West Park Place just before 2 a.m. Sunday, to a chaotic scene where numerous gunshots were fired.

Stamford police released a video from a witness that shows one innocent bystander duck for cover behind a car. You can also hear gunshots being fired off during the video.

The video also shows the suspect in a red shirt firing into the crowd of people.

"I witnessed people running by and screaming and falling on the floor after the gunshots," eyewitness Terrance Jones of Stamford said.

Police also said they secured several crime scenes within two blocks of the downtown area.

"That was the first time I heard gunshots since being here. Yeah, it was a scary moment. It was surreal. It almost was like it was fireworks," said Jones.

Police arrested Dayron Wills, 22, of 300 Tresser Blvd., Apt. No. 7E, Stamford. Wills admitted to being involved in the shooting, and said he dropped his loaded handgun near the intersection of Atlantic Street and Bank Street.

"I think it's awful and terrible, and I would hope when something like that happens, they would regulate it or make sure there is security or cops in the area to make sure something like that never happens again," Brittany Beltran of San Francisco said.

Wills said he was involved in an altercation outside of the nightclub, pulled out his handgun and began shooting the other person involved in the altercation.

"I was shocked. I heard about it this morning that there was some shooting going on, but depending on types of bars, things happen," Ralph Faugno, of Stamford, said.

Police said Wills has a valid pistol permit and was legally registered to carry the weapon.

Officers said they found a small amount of marijuana from Wills, and police were able to use video evidence of Wills firing shots into a crowd.

All five victims, four males and one female, were taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment. All of the injuries appear to be not life-threatening.

"It is terrible. Probably people aren't going to want to come here because they don't feel secure anymore," Mario Lopez, co-owner of Gastro Bar and Azuca, said.

Wills was charged with five counts of first degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and possession of marijuana.

He was being held on a $1 million bond and is expected to appear in court Monday.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, saw the evidence video, and said, "this terrifying video reinforces the urgent need to stop gun violence. These injuries and deaths and the fear they instill in communities and neighborhoods across America can be stopped. Congress must act now."

The shooting is still being investigated, and anyone with information should contact Stamford police at (203 )977-4444.
