RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond firefighters are calling an accident involving an SUV plowing through a local YMCA, a miracle. A Dodge Durango smashed through the side entrance wall, and into the workout area of the Northside Family YMCA. The shocking crash happened just after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Incredibly, no one was hurt.

Police believe the driver lost control after having a medical emergency behind the wheel. No lives were taken or impacted for the worse, inside the gym or SUV.

"It was a miracle," said Richmond Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Currie. "If this would have been a busy traffic day at the YMCA, I'm sure it could have been devastating."

Officials say the SUV lost control about a block from the YMCA on Brook Road. The vehicle crossed oncoming traffic, ran over a tree, hit two signs, and then smashed through the glass doors and cinder blocks of the building. The Durango careened 25 feet through treadmills and other equipment. The driver and two preteens in the SUV weren't injured. The couple gym members closest to the Durango, as it barreled through the gym, didn't get hit.

Organizers of the Greater Richmond YMCA are grateful the outcome wasn't more severe.

"You look at the glass that's everywhere, and it could have been worse… We're thankful that no one was hurt in the situation," said Charlotte Dean, spokesperson for the YMCA of Greater Richmond, which facilitates 19 YMCA branches in the area.

The Northside Family YMCA will open Monday at normal time, 5:30 A.M.. Summer camp is still being held at the branch, as scheduled. The damaged area of the gym will be closed off, until fully repaired.
