HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A police officer was hospitalized after being stabbed Sunday afternoon and the suspect is dead, according to the Hendersonville police chief.

Two officers were responding to a call for service at an apartment above the Like New consignment store on Third Avenue near Church Street when a man stabbed one of the officers, according to Chief Herbert Blake.

"The officer was stabbed in an area just below the bullet-proof vest but above the belt," Blake said.

Blake said the second officer shot and killed the suspect.

The injured officer was transported to Pardee Hospital and then transferred to Mission Hospital due to his injuries, Blake said.

Police identified the officer as Sgt. Kenny Hipps and said he was in serious condition Monday, but he did not have life-threatening injuries. According to the city's website, Hipps was named the Officer of the Year for 2013.

"I've been here 6 and a half years … and this is the third officer involved shooting that I can recall - so that's not a lot," Blake said.

Police identified the second officer involved as Officer Jennifer Drake, who is a K9 officer and trainer.

Details on what led up to the stabbing are still unclear, Blake said.

The man that was killed was identified as 46-year-old Adrian Eugene King.

"We are still at the very early stages of this investigation," Blake said.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation is also investigating the case.
