LANDRUM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The United States Postal Service is investigating an ongoing problem of mail thefts in the Landrum area.

According to a spokesperson for the USPS in Columbia, customers have reported mail thefts in the Landrum delivery area and the postmaster and the Postal Inspection Service are investigating.

The USPS reminds customers of the following steps to protect their mail:

  • Use letter slots at the post office to mail letters, or give them to a letter carrier.
  • Pick up mail promptly after delivery. Do not leave it in a mailbox overnight.
  • Do not send cash in the mail.
  • Ask banks for "secure" checks that cannot be altered.
  • When out of town, put mail on hold. The "Hold Mail" service can be provided for three to 30 days, or use Premium Forwarding Service for longer periods.
  • Form a neighborhood "Crime Watch" group. If you see something, say something.
  • Report all mail theft to a Postal Inspector by calling 877-876-2455.

The USPS said they are investigating the thefts along with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
