NORCO, LA (WVUE) -
Reptiles, wildlife and folks fishing are common sights along the bayous of Louisiana. On the weekends, you can see boats pulling people along the waterways on skis, wakeboards and inner tubes.
But lately, some boaters are making the Bonnet Carre Spillway look more like a beach in Hawaii by catching waves in a different way.
Dave Posey and his wife, Carla Gray, Hang 10 behind a specially made boat in the waterways of the New Orleans metro area. The sport is called wake surfing.
Posey runs a business, Ride or Rent Dave's Wakeboat, where anyone can learn how to surf in a boat's wake. The boat has "surf gate" technology, according to Posey. In older boats, passengers would have to lean on one side of the boat to create the unique water trail behind the vessel. "Surf gate" eliminates the need for that.
The rider uses a rope to pull themselves up on a surfboard, then when they are up to speed, they let the rope go and surf behind boat for as long as they can stay up.
Posey and Gray, who boast they are both older than 50, have been water skiing since 1988. They moved to wake boarding until Gray suffered an eye injury. Now, they are personal trainers at a gym they run in Metairie. Gray is also a well coach for an insurance company that works with Harrah's Casino.
Gray was able to learn how to wake surf in just a couple of weeks, according to her husband.
