School districts scramble for teachers

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Southern Arizona has hundreds of open teaching positions right now, just a few weeks before students come through classroom doors. Districts are searching wide for their next teaching hires.

Sahuarita has twelve open positions labeled for teachers. That's more than usual for the district this time of year, and a human resources assistant said that Sahuarita has spent more for advertising this year than in previous years. Recruitment has reached to places like Oregon for candidates.

Marana has nine teaching positions that range from elementary to high school. The numbers might not sound large, but open spots can affect classrooms.

And when the district gets bigger, like Sunnyside, so does the number of the openings, at 79.

And Tucson's largest school district has the largest number of posted teaching spots, at 136 in Tucson Unified School District.

Amphitheater has 43, Flowing Wells has five, and Catalina Foothills has about twelve posted teaching jobs.

The hiring challenge is already upon Vail which started this week, and has five jobs posted with “teacher” in the title.

The only district that did not appear to have specific job openings for certified teachers was Tanque Verde.

The Vail superintendent pointed out Monday that certification is expensive for teachers coming to Arizona and pay is low. Districts pay in the high 20's to low 30’s to start.

And charters don't have to use certified teachers.
