SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Campobello man is accused of beating his girlfriend, saying he did not know what came over him, and the woman had to run for help after she was held against her will, according to deputies.

Spartanburg County deputies said the woman ran to a neighbor's house Thursday morning, who then took her to the police station after she was beaten Wednesday night.

The woman said her boyfriend told her she couldn't leave and was unable to escape until after he got up in the morning, according to a deputy's report.

When deputies went to the couple's home, they said the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Isaac Stewart, immediately told them, "I beat the ---- out of her."

After making sure he knew his rights, deputies said Stewart did not know what set him off because the victim had done nothing wrong, but he just started beating her. According to the report, Stewart said he had been taking medicine for depression.

When asked again, Stewart said the woman had done nothing wrong, that he went off and started beating her, deputies said. After he was taken to the jail, deputies said Stewart's written statement was not as detailed and when asked about holding her against her will, he said he did not tell her that she could not leave or use the bathroom.

He told deputies when he got up in the morning to use the restroom, she ran out of the home.

The woman was taken to the hospital with swollen eye, complaining of neck and back pain, deputies said.

Stewart was arrested and charged with kidnapping and criminal domestic violence high and aggravated.
