Carolinas opinion mixed on offshore drilling

Posted: Updated:

Opinions are mixed in the Carolinas to the Obama administration decision opening the Eastern Seaboard to offshore energy exploration.

The administration on Friday approved the use of sonic cannon to pinpoint energy deposits.

Katie Zimmerman of the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League warns using the cannon risks leaving right whales deaf, something she says will kill the creatures.

Steve Shuttleworth, a town councilman in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, near Wilmington, says the council several months ago passed a resolution opposing the use of the air cannon. He says both the economic benefits and environmental threats of developing offshore energy are not clear to the community.

But South Carolina state Sen. Paul Campbell says energy will mean jobs and revenue for the state and says it can be tapped safely.
