(RNN) - James Garner, actor known best for his role in long-running, iconic 1970's TV show The Rockford Files, died over the weekend at age 86, it was reported Sunday morning.

Garner's role as curmudgeonly private eye Jim Rockford gained him an Emmy in 1977, as well as several nominations for the show that ran from 1974 to 1980. He also played gunfighter Bret Maverick in the TV Western Maverick during the 1950s, for which he also earned an Emmy.

He earned two Emmys and 15 nominations in all during a career that spanned several decades, according to Variety.

He was born on April 7, 1928, in Norman, OK, as James Bumgarner, and served more than a year in the Korean conflict, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Garner's first major role was as Marlon Brando's friend in Sayonara. Other film roles he was noted for include 1986's Murphy's Romance and the musical Victor/Victoria.
