GREENVILLE, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

A group gathered in front of City Hall in downtown Greenville on Sunday to protest the Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Protesters lined the sidewalk on Main Street and held signs with messages like "Free Gaza" and "Save the children of Gaza."

The ralliers, local residents with Palestinian ties, called for an end to the fighting.

Israel has been embroiled in a battle against Hamas operatives in Gaza for two weeks.

The first major ground battle took place Sunday, claiming the lives of 65 Palestinians and 23 Israelis.

The Israeli deaths were the first in the conflict.

More than 400 Palestinians have been killed and thousands wounded.

Israeli leaders said the attacks began as retaliation to missile attacks launched by Hamas, a militant group and extremist political faction, operating in Palestine.
