SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews set up barriers to protect Lake Keowee from an oil leak at Duke Energy's hydro station, according to a spokesperson for the facility.

Oconee Nuclear Station spokesperson BJ Gaffney said five gallons of oil leaked into the lake on Sunday.

He said the leak happened at the Keowee Hydro Station that produces electricity using water turbines. It is located next to the nuclear facility.

Gaffney said the leak was stopped immediately and contained with booms in the lake, posing no danger.

Lake Keowee not only serves as an electricity source but also provides cooling for the nuclear plant.
