CANNON BEACH, OR (KPTV) -

A fatal crash on the Oregon coast went undiscovered for 12 hours until a hitchhiker heard cries for help.

Emergency crews were called out to Highway 101 about a mile north of Cannon Beach at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

A hitchhiker spotted a crashed car 40 feet down a heavily wooded embankment.

One person had been killed. The driver survived and called out for help.

Investigators said the car, driven by Gabriela Rayon, 21, of Vancouver, was heading south on Highway 101 when it left the roadway and went down the embankment.

The passenger side of the car hit a tree before coming to a stop in heavy brush. The passenger, identified as Ruth Delgado, 23, of Los Angeles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rayon suffered serious injuries and was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria before being transferred to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. She was listed in fair condition Monday morning.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, according to Oregon State Police.

The car was not visible from the roadway. Investigators believe the crash had occurred at least 12 hours before the car was discovered by the hitchhiker.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
