Popular show makes prison jumpsuits new trend

Posted: Updated:

According to fans of the popular Netflix series, orange is the new black, but a Mid-Michigan sheriff isn't buying it.

In response to the recent trend in people wearing orange jumpsuits in public he's replacing inmates' standard issue threads with old school black and white stripes.

The new uniform has sort of an old look to it and the sheriff said there is nothing fashionable about it.

"I don't ever want citizens of Saginaw County to wonder if they see someone in orange is it inmate or not," Sheriff William Federspiel said.

A popular Netflix show about prison called Orange is the New Black is to blame for the trend. A show so hot it's apparently inspiring a fashion trend that he finds troubling.

"We started seeing a trend among some citizens in our community that were wearing all orange in public and we have also seen a change in the medical field where nurses are going to a more relaxed scrub type uniform," Federspiel said.

He said the change in attire at hospitals is much more serious than a fashion faux pas.

"We regularly transport inmates that are having medical conditions to the hospital. I don't ever want them to blend in," he said.

For now orange is out. Black and white horizontal stripes are in, at least at the county jail.

"Until black and white horizontal stripes becomes the new black we are changing our uniform," Federspiel said.

He said he expects all of the inmates to be in the new uniform by the end of the year.
