SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A man walking in the city's Forest Park neighborhood was beaten and then slashed in the face by a machete before being hit by a car his attackers fled in, police said.

A group of six friends were walking down Converse Street about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when a car bearing CT plates with a group of four people inside slowed down and an altercation ensued, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The woman and five men that were walking the city streets all began to pound on the car, which was described as a dark gray car, possibly a Mitsubishi Gallant or Toyota Camry, Delaney said.

That's when the two women and two men inside the car stepped out and a physical fight took place. Two of the men assaulted one of the men who was walking in the group. The woman who was driving the car then grabbed a machete-style large knife and sliced a 20-year-old man across the face, Delaney said.

She was described as Hispanic standing about 4'11" tall with a "bobbed" style haircut, Delaney said.

The group got back in the car and the woman who just had cut in the victim across the face put the car in reverse and backed up into him and another man. The impact caused the rear windshield to shatter before the driver fled down Sumner Avenue, Delaney said.

The victim's friends carried him to the Sunoco gas station at the corner of Sumner Avenue and White Street where they waved down a police officer. He told other officers to be on the lookout for the suspects' car and immediately performed first aid to stop the victim from bleeding, Delaney said.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with a large laceration on his face. He did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to Delaney.

Detectives immediately began to speak with witnesses who observed the attack.

"The officers are not yet sure the motive behind the attack other than the verbal argument between the two parties," Delaney said.

Anyone who has any information regarding this crime is asked to please call the Springfield Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or "text-a-tip."
