Cat exposes person to rabies in Greenville Co.

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Someone in Greenville County came in contact with a rabid, stray cat, according to health officials.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said the person came in contact with the cat, which tested positive for the disease, and has been sent for preventative treatment.

Health officials remind people to avoid wild animals acting tame or tame animals acting wild, and if someone comes in contact, they are urged to wash the wound immediately, seek medical help and report the incident to DHEC if bitten or scratched.

DHEC said there have been 68 confirmed cases of rabid animals statewide in 2014 and the cat was the fourth to test positive from Greenville County.

Health officials did not say where or how the person came in contact with the stray cat.
