GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Homeowners in Greenville County pay the lowest rates for homeowners insurance of any of the 46 counties in the state, according to a study by ValuePenguin.com.

The site said homeowners in Greenville County pay an average annual premium of $703, which is 35 percent cheaper than the state average and $1,700 cheaper than Charleston County - the most expensive county for the insurance.

Other Upstate counties also top the list with cheap rates, in fact, nine of the top 10 are Upstate counties, with Spartanburg County at number 3, Oconee County at number 4 and Pickens County rounding out the top 5.

This comes as no surprise as the area is far away from the large storms that come in off the Atlantic.

The two most expensive counties are the coastal counties of Charleston and Georgetown. The average annual premiums for homeowners insurance in Charleston County runs about $2,410 - 340 percent higher than in Greenville, according to ValuePenguin.

Georgetown County is the second most expensive with homeowners paying an average of $2,399 per year.
