Police say a 12-year-old, who was behind the wheel of a truck, struck his older brother and ran the truck into a house Saturday afternoon.

Olathe police were called to South Troost Street near West Dennis Avenue about 1:30 p.m. They were told that the boy was sitting in the driver's seat of a truck that was idling in the driveway of a home when he put it into gear.

The truck hit his 16-year-old brother who was standing in front of it, supervising, and then barreled into the house.

Oliveria Ortiz said she heard the crash from inside her home and found her family's truck halfway into her living room with her 16-year-old brother pinned underneath.

"He was in pain. He just wanted to get out of there," Ortiz said.

She said it turns out her 12-year-old brother wanted some driving practice but, when he tried to park the car in the driveway, he punched the gas instead of the brakes.

"I think he got nervous. He was crying. He was scared," she said.

The crash ransacked the family's living room. The truck tore up tables and chairs and nearly hit a younger child who was in the house.

"He was playing video games and he got covered with the sofa, so nothing happened to him," Ortiz said.

Saturday evening the family tacked up a black tarp to cover the giant hole in the front of their home. Ortiz and her family will stay with relatives and try to salvage what they can.

"We cannot stay there because they took out the electricity, so they're going to come check the house," she said.

The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.
