IVA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate police chief has been suspended after he was arrested by Anderson County deputies.

Lt. Sheila Cole said deputies responded to a domestic violence call at Iva Police Chief Thomas Miller's home on Hampton Street just after 2:25 p.m. Saturday.

Cole said deputies spoke to two victims at the scene and found enough evidence to place Miller under arrest.

"After those interviews we determined that there was evidence of criminal domestic violence," said Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper.

Miller was charged with criminal domestic violence and assault and battery third-degree, according to arrest warrants.

The incident report shows there was video evidence to support the charges.

The warrants state Miller struck a juvenile multiple times with a piece of wood, causing cuts on the teen's arms.

The warrants also state that Miller grabbed a woman and threw her in an aggressive manner, causing her to be in fear of physical harm.

Miller was released on his own recognizance shortly after a Saturday evening bond hearing.

Miller declined to comment as he left the jail, according to a FOX Carolina crew at the scene.

Skipper wouldn't comment directly on the incident, but told FOX Carolina, "We answered a call and we did what we felt was right according to the law."

The sheriff's office is handling the investigation of this case, but Skipper said there's not much investigating left to do.

"We'll do a follow up with this but usually criminal domestic violence is on it's face what it is. The evidence was there when we arrived and there's not a lot to follow up on," said Skipper.

Iva town councilwoman Mary Forrester confirmed the chief had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Forrester said the council and Mayor Bobby Gentry were expected to discuss the issue further on Monday.

Capt. Jason Hawkins will serve as acting chief in Miller's absence, according to town officials.
