SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg City Council has awarded a contract to demolish a dilapidated motel across from Wofford College.

The council voted 7-0 at their meeting on Monday to award a $107,500 contract to NEO Corporation to demolish the Sunshine Inn on North Church Street.

In March, the city council first approved tearing down the motel after Northside Development Corporation purchased the motel for $600,000.

The demolition comes as part of the city's Northside Initiative - a plan to revitalize that area of the city.

Demolition is expected to begin by the middle of August.
