LOCKHART, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Union County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man accused of hitting a 9-year-old child, according to sheriff's office spokesperson Kim Bailey.

Bailey said deputies were called to a home on N. First Street in Lockhart on July 29 in reference to an assault.

The caller said she was at work while her children were at the home with Robert Sumner, according to Bailey.

The woman reported that she received a text message from her 15-year-old son that said Sumner had hit her 9-year-old child.

When deputies arrived, they found the children sitting outside with their 2-year-old brother, according to Bailey.

She said the children were visibly upset and the deputy saw minor swelling under the 9-year-old's eye.

The child told deputies that Sumner hit him.

The department of social services was notified and responded to the scene, Bailey said.

Sumner was charged with child cruelty and was taken to Union County jail, according to Bailey.
