Catalytic converters stolen from cars in west Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Four vehicles in a west Toledo neighborhood are missing a pretty important part of their emissions systems after thieves hit up the area Tuesday night.

The catalytic converters were cut off four vehicles in an apartment-heavy neighborhood of west Toledo. The thieves most likely took the parts to scrap.

"One of the best things you can do if you are worried about your catalytic converter being stolen is to put some sort of identifying mark on it or some high-temp paint," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "That way, if someone steals it, you give us a call and we'll check the scrap yards."

There are also brackets you can purchase to secure your catalytic converter, but a city ordinance is also in place to help protect car owners.

"When there are flare-ups like this that happen, we will go to the scrap yards to see who is scrapping the converters and it's pretty easy for us to figure out from there who is doing it," Heffernan said.

Scrap yards are required to keep names and photos of all scrappers. They also need proof of ownership on any catalytic converter before accepting it, making it harder for criminals to get cash for their crime.

Another part of the ordinance allows police to search scrap yard facilities without a search warrant at any time, forcing workers there to comply with the city laws.
