CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) -

The woman who has been president of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts since 2002 will be the next chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

The UNC Board of Governors voted Friday to name 53-year-old Mary Grant to the post. She'll assume her duties Jan. 5, 2015, succeeding Anne Ponder.

Ponder said in January that she would retire this summer after nine years as chancellor.

UNC President Tom Ross said Doug Orr will serve as UNC Asheville's interim chancellor, beginning Sept. 1. Orr is president emeritus of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa.
