ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

The husband of Cannon Beach murder suspect Jessica Smith expressed concern about their daughters in court documents filed just weeks before the girls were found in a bloodied Oregon Coast hotel room.

Jessica Smith, however, also filed for a restraining order against her husband last month, claiming mental and emotional abuse.

A housekeeper at The Surfsand Resort found 2-year-old Isabella Smith dead and her 13-year-old sister Alanna Smith injured early Friday. Alanna Smith, who police said suffered critical cuts, is now in stable condition.

The discovery of the girls set off a frantic search for their mother, and a Coast Guard helicopter eventually spotted her gold Chevy Suburban off a rural logging road in Clatsop County. Smith was arrested and booked into jail.

Court documents filed in Washington prior to last week's events described the state of Jessica Smith's relationship with her estranged husband. Greg Smith said his wife sent "a barrage of text messages" between July 2 and July 7 and that he also received a bizarre voicemail from his daughter.

"The language Alanna used is not typical of someone her age and it sounds as though she is reading from something that Jessica scripted," Greg Smith wrote in court filings. "She made statements such as, 'I'm so sick I can hardly talk,' (and) 'I can't sleep very well because I'm tormented by the thought of you in our lives.'"

Jessica Smith filed for a restraining order against her husband on July 17. In the filing documents, she claimed her husband subjected her to bullying, neglect and emotional abuse.

The hand-written petition said Greg Smith had filed for divorce "behind my back without communicating anything whatsoever to me, after I had begun the filing process already."

Jessica Smith also claimed her husband was "smearing my name and my family who he doesn't know, on court record."

Jessica Smith wrote that their daughter Alana "doesn't trust him based on her own experiences" and alleges further mental and emotional abuse toward the girl.

Greg Smith said in the court documents filed July 21 that he had no history of a negative relationship with his daughters, and he claimed Jessica Smith was manipulating his children in to believing otherwise. He asked the court for a bilateral custody evaluation.

The two married in 1996, and Greg Smith began to move toward ending the marriage in November 2013.

They continued to live together until April of this year. After he moved out, Greg Smith said his efforts to see the girls or call them were "thwarted or ignored."

The day the two children were found in the Cannon Beach hotel room, Jessica Smith was supposed to turn the girls over to their father for visitation, according to Greg Smith's attorney.

Nathan Judd, who is Jessica Smith's brother, said his family is devastated and heartbroken by the allegations against his sister.

"I can't imagine my sister would ever do something like that," he told FOX 12.

Jessica Smith made her first court appearance in Clatsop County on Monday via video conference. She's facing charges of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.

She did not make a statement in court.
