GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Greenville Zoo Director Jeff Bullock confirmed early Wednesday morning that Autumn the giraffe was in labor.
She went into labor a little before 3 a.m., but since then the zoo has turned the webcam on Walter. The zoo later shared difficult news that Autumn delivered a stillborn calf. Read more here.
Bullock said there would be a few tell-tale signs indicating when Autumn goes into labor. He said they were watching for fluids and what will look like a bag of water, then the calf could any time after that.
In October 2012, he said it took about an hour for Kiko to be born, with thousands watching his birth. Then soon after he took his first steps.
The zoo has been staffed around the clock for when Auburn went into labor.
Both Walter and Autumn are on a breeding loan to the Greenville Zoo. Autumn is from the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, which is where Kiko will return. Walter is from the San Diego Zoo, which is where the second calf will one day return, and the pair's third calf will remain in Greenville.
